Record Number of Grads Come Back to BU
Alums from all classes invited for Reunion & Alumni Weekend
Alumni will return to BU this weekend to catch up with former classmates, check out campus improvements, perform community service, and cheer on the Terriers.
Reunion & Alumni Weekend starts today, October 24, with a continental breakfast and career workshops and ends Sunday, October 26, with a 5K run/walk along the Charles. In between: Alumni College classes, school and college open houses, BU Oktoberfest, a BU Beach Bash, men’s and women’s hockey games, and special events for the classes of 1958, 1983, 1998, 2007, and 2008. This year, all alumni — not just members of reunion-year classes — are invited back.
“We’re beyond excited to welcome a record number of alumni home for a beautiful fall weekend,” says Steven A. Hall, associate vice president for development and alumni relations. “Those who haven’t been to campus in years will be thrilled by the latest developments. And even our local alumni are going to see a more inspired, electrified BU alumni community than ever before.”
An important initiative this year is the Leadership Summit, which will bring together “alumni committed to playing a role in Boston University’s future,” Hall says. “Alumni will spend the day with President Robert Brown, Board of Trustees Chairman Robert Knox (CAS’74, GSM’75), and other BU leaders, discussing our strengths, challenges, and strategies for taking BU to the next level of excellence.”
The summit will include a luncheon recognizing the contributions of volunteer leaders and distinguished alumni across all Boston University schools, colleges, and programs. Brown and Steve Karbank (CAS’79), president of the BU Alumni Association, will speak, and the keynote address will be delivered by Mike Eruzione (SED’77), director of special outreach for development and alumni relations.
On Saturday, scores of alumni will head to the William Monroe Trotter Elementary School in Dorchester for a Young Alumni Community Service project. They will paint walls, clean, organize the library, and sand and paint benches.
Later in the day, affinity group reunions — for ROTC alumni and veterans, Core Curriculum alums, former RAs, and varsity and club athletes, among others — will take place.
Nearly 1,500 alumni and guests, more than double the attendance of previous years, are expected to attend Reunion & Alumni Weekend. Starting this year, the event is being held in the fall, rather than spring.
“Our Terriers are coming from all over the country and from destinations around the globe,” says Meg Umlas, executive director of alumni relations. “We’re delighted to introduce this new tradition, and we’ll continue to work hard and respond to alumni feedback so that the weekend will grow every year.”
