Satire at CFA
Stuff Happens skewers Iraq invasion, runs through May 4

A political satire about the road to war in Iraq is the final production of the College of Fine Arts school of theatre 2007–2008 season. With an ensemble cast featuring characters such as George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and Colin Powell, David Hare’s Stuff Happens hits the Boston University Theatre at a time that could be considered a turning point in American politics. Directed by Jim Petosa, the director of the school of theatre, Stuff Happens runs April 30 through May 4 on the theater’s mainstage.
British playwright Hare uses a combination of actual quotes from press conferences and television interviews and imagined conversations to re-create the events and discussions leading up to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. The controversial play depicts both camaraderie and turmoil within the inner circle of the world’s politicians and decision- makers.
“Stuff Happens is the best kind of challenge,” Petosa says. “Like all of Hare’s work, it poses powerful questions for theater artists and audiences. This is no mere documentary, but rather a theatrical journey through the confounding events that led to the current Iraq War. In this time of decision, it dares the best in critical thinking as it poses characters and events of tragic proportions.”
Stuff Happens began at the Boston University Theatre, 264 Huntington Ave., on April 30 and is playing on Friday, May 2, and Saturday, May 3, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for the general public and $10 for students, senior citizens, and BU alumni. Members of the BU community receive one free ticket per BU ID at the door on the day of the performance, subject to availability.
