SHA Reaches Out to Minority High School Students
Robin Brewster (SHA’10) and SHA’s award-winning National Society of Minorities in Hospitality chapter reach out to minority high school students
Robin Brewster (SHA’10) wanted to be a member of the School of Hospitality Administration chapter of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) ever since she attended an SHA open house as a high school senior. Now president of the BU chapter, which was recently named 2008 Chapter of the Year by the national organization, Brewster is the one reaching out to high school students.
The group has developed a partnership with the Multicultural Foodservice and Hospitality Alliance (MFHA), a national nonprofit that promotes the economic benefits of diversity and inclusion in the foodservice and hospitality industry, to enhance its high school initiative. “MFHA shares many of the same values as NSMH,” Brewster says. “It focuses its efforts on the development of diversity solutions for the industry.”
Brewster and other NSMH members will host the MFHA annual career exploration event, Showcase of the Stars, today, April 2, from 9 a.m. to noon in the George Sherman Union auditorium. Together, the two groups will provide 200 minority high school students from the area with information about the hospitality industry. Students will attend a panel discussion, take a tour of BU, watch a pastry demonstration by Aramark workers, and meet industry executives and NSMH members. The event takes place during NSMH’s Hospitality Week, March 29 to April 5.
Besides Chapter of the Year honors, the SHA chapter received three awards at the National Conference Annual Awards Gala in February: Most Traveled Chapter, Best Membership Drive, and Best Chapter Newsletter.
