Silber Way Dedicated on Wednesday
Sherborn Street renamed for President Emeritus John Silber

John Silber, president emeritus of Boston University, joined Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and President Robert A. Brown for the dedication of Silber Way, formerly Sherborn Street, on Wednesday, May 14.
Menino (Hon.’01) announced the initiative at a dinner honoring Silber (Hon.’95) in April 2007. At that time, the Boston University administrative offices at One Sherborn Street were renamed the John and Kathryn Silber Administrative Center.
Silber, BU’s seventh president, led the University from 1971 to 1996. During his tenure, he hired distinguished faculty, raised admission standards, and built the endowment. He also oversaw a building program that generated 13.7 million square feet of new or renovated space, including the Arthur G. B. Metcalf Center for Science and Engineering and the Rafik B. Hariri Building for the School of Management.
Silber became University chancellor in 1996, but returned briefly to the president’s office in July 2002 after the resignation of Jon Westling (Hon.’03); Silber stepped down as chancellor and acting president in October 2003 when President Emeritus Aram Chobanian (Hon.’06) became president ad interim. Silber is a University Professor, a College of Arts and Sciences professor of philosophy and of international relations, and a School of Law professor of law.
