Summer Street Fair For City Dwellers
BU and Mayor Menino join forces to bring performances, music, and food to budget-conscious Bostonians

Has the price of gas forced the word “staycation” into your summer vocabulary? If so, BU and the city of Boston have put together a little something for your, um, “staytinerary.”
On Saturday, August 2, the Student Village and Agganis Arena will be the site of a free day-long street fair, barbecue and concert. Dubbed “Summer in the City,” the fair is one in a series of city-sponsored summer events around Boston.
“I’m extremely gratified by the hard work that Boston University’s staff has put in to create Summer in the City,” Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said in a statement. “It is going to be a wonderful, free opportunity for families to enjoy a day out in Boston.”
The fun kicks off at 11 a.m. when you can stop by the Agganis Arena for free tickets to the day’s events. While you’re in the lobby check out the Red Sox 2007 World Series trophy and the Celtics 2008 NBA championship trophy, both available for picture taking. Plus, the first 3,000 ticket holders will receive free t-shirts.
Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., the Fitness and Recreation Center, at 905 Commonwealth Ave, will be the spot for family activities, including basketball, indoor soccer, water volleyball, tae kwon do demonstrations, table tennis, rock wall climbing, Double Dutch workshops, and salsa and hip-hop performances.
The street part of the fair gets under way at noon on Harry Agganis Way and will feature performers, face painters, a free BBQ lunch, and plenty of ice cream and cotton candy. The afternoon will be capped off by the Summer in the City Cooldown Concert in Agganis Arena, featuring hip-hop act the Floorlords, R&B artists 4Peace, and American Idol finalists Brandon Rogers and Paris Bennett.
All events are free, but guests must have a ticket. For more information, click here or call (617) 358-7000.
