Softball falls to Stony Brook in extra innings
The number 11 Boston University women’s lacrosse team extended its winning streak to seven on Sunday, April 6, edging out a 14-11 win over number 18/10 Stanford at Stanford, behind a 7-2 second-half run. Cocaptain Lauren Morton (CAS’08) led all scorers with four goals, and Sarah Dalton (CGS’07, CAS’09) and Traci Landy (CGS’08) each notched three scores. Cocaptain Molly Collins (CAS’08) added two scores and an assist, and Kelly Munroe (CGS’07, COM’09) and Erica Baumgartner (CGS’08) tallied a goal apiece. Rachel Klein (CAS’10) made 13 saves in goal.
The Terriers (10-2) opened the game with a four-goal run within the first 10 minutes. However, Stanford (7-6) answered back with three of its own before another three scores from BU pushed the score to 7-3. The Cardinals launched a six-goal streak that lasted into the second half to give Stanford a 9-7 advantage before the Terriers scored seven of the game’s final nine goals.
More than half of the game’s goals came on free-position opportunities, as BU scored 7 goals on 12 chances and Stanford went 6-for-12.
The teams played evenly in most statistical categories, with both teams tallying 35 shots, 17 ground balls, and 13 saves. BU edged Stanford in draw controls, 14-13, and turnovers, with Stanford committing 15 and BU fumbling 10 plays.
The Terriers will look to continue their spotless conference slate with a game against Stony Brook Wednesday, April 9, at Nickerson Field at 4 p.m. BU has won all three of its America East games this season.
Softball falls to Stony Brook in extra innings, 2-1
The Boston University softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Stony Brook in extra innings on Sunday, April 6, as the Seawolves rallied to score two unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings. The Terriers fall to 18-12 overall and 5-1 in America East, while SBU improves to 15-14-1 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
The Terriers scored one run on four hits from four different batters, and the pitching staff held Stony Brook scoreless through six innings, until the Seawolves’ bats came alive in the seventh and eighth to score two unanswered runs and end the game in extra innings.
Cassidi Hardy (SED’10) pitched three scoreless innings, and Kelley Engman (CAS’11) took over in the fourth, striking out five batters and allowing two runs on four hits, to be charged with the loss.
The Terriers scored in the first on a wild pitch, which brought home April Setterlund (SMG’11), and they maintained that slight edge through six innings, until Stony Brook knotted the game in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out home run to left center.
In the eighth, with the bases loaded, BU had a golden opportunity; however, Stony Brook pitcher Alyssa Struzenberg forced a ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Seawolves put runners at the corners, and a single to right center on the next at-bat plated the game-winner.
BU will host nine straight home games beginning Wednesday, April 9, in doubleheader action with Maine at 3 p.m.
