Top Terrier Moments: Number 2 — Lacrosse Uses Second-Half Surge to Wipe Out Wildcats
Dalton leads late charge to lift Terriers into NCAA quarterfinals
Coming in at number two on the Terrier Twelve is the women’s lacrosseteam’s run of eight straight goals to close out a 16-8 victory overrival New Hampshire in the first round of the NCAA tournament on May11. Sarah Dalton(CGS’07, CAS’09) matched a career-high six goals, including four in the late run, to help the Terriers break an 8-8 deadlock and advance to thequarterfinal round for just the second time in program history.
The conference rivals had met twice earlier in the season,with the Terriers claiming a one-goal win on both occasions. Itfelt like the third matchup would also come down to thewire, as the teams were tied or separated by a single goal for 40of the game’s first 42 minutes.
After a goal by Xan Weitzel(CGS’08) gave BU its first lead (8-7) of the second half, with 21:44 left inregulation, UNH tied the game just under two minutes later. TheTerriers dominated from that point on, however, reeling off eightstraight goals and keeping the Wildcats scoreless for the final 20minutes of play.
Steph Walker(CGS’07, COM’09) turned in a strong performance, matching career bests in both goals (3)and points (4). Weitzel had two goals and two assists, and Lauren Morton (CAS’08) and Traci Landy (CGS’08, SED’10) each came up with a pair of goals and an assist. Cocaptain Molly Collins (CAS’08) recorded five draw controls, four caused turnovers, and three ground balls.
The Terriers went on to fall to Penn, the eventual nationalrunner-up, by a score of 8-5, in the NCAA quarterfinals. Dalton, theAmerica East Player of the Year, earned first-team All-Americahonors, and Morton was a second-team selection. In addition to Daltonand Morton, Collins, Landy, Kelly Munroe (CGS’07, COM’09), and Rachel Klein (CAS’10) were all-region honorees.
