Vocal Jazz Ensemble Sings for Celtics
The BU Vocal Jazz Ensemble sang the national anthem at a Celtics game last week

Last October, the BU Vocal Jazz Ensemble tried out at an open-call audition to sing at a Boston Celtics basketball game, but when they didn’t hear back, the group’s eight members assumed they hadn’t been chosen. Happily, they were wrong.
On February 12, their director, Evan Sanders (CAS’03), sent them each a text message telling them that the ensemble would perform the national anthem at the next day’s game against the New York Knicks.
The group’s performance on February 13 at TD Banknorth Garden was a success, says Sanders, a College of Fine Arts lecturer in the music program. “It was definitely a thrill for all of the students,” he says. “It’s definitely the biggest crowd we’ve ever been in front of.”
Sanders was by no means surprised that his singers did so well. The audition-only group of undergraduates representing five schools at BU, he says, is “a pretty select ensemble.”
