What to Do: September 19-21

Is studying for your first chemistry exam frying your brain? Take a break for a few hours — or a few days — and consider our suggestions for this weekend. A mix of on- and off-campus fun, these events are sure to relieve your school-week stress.

Friday, September 19
If you’re a fan of Dane Cook’s comedy, then don’t miss out on a night with Daniel Tosh, one the nation’s premier comics. Tosh has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman, and his album True Stories I Made Up was released in 2005. Tosh performs tonight at Metcalf Hall, on the second floor of the George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Ave. Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. If you need to get off-campus, take a trip down to the waterfront to see Icelandic music sensation Sigur Rós perform at the Bank of America Pavilion, 290 Northern Ave., Boston. Indie film buffs will want to check out the premiere of Towelhead at the historic Coolidge Corner Theatre. Based on the novel of the same name, the movie centers on Jasira, a 13-year-old Arab-American girl, and her transition into a new town, where racial tension is pervasive. Are you an avid RENT fan? Then be sure to head to the Boston Center for the Arts Wimberly Theatre as the Huntington Theatre Company presents Adam Pascal, Roger from the Tony Award-winning musical and major motion picture, performing a variety of famous Broadway musical numbers and rock ’n’ roll favorites. The set list will include songs from popular composers and songwriters, such as Stephen Sondheim, Elton John, and the Beatles. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $25 to $45. Student rush tickets are available for $15 on the day of the performance after 5 p.m., cash only, at the BCA box office, 539 Tremont St., Boston, and at the BU Theatre box office, 264 Huntington Ave., Boston. Saturday, September 20
Lovers of ’80s films and brat-pack fans alike should attend BU Central’s Movies That Rock: The Breakfast Club. The cult classic plays at 8:30 p.m. and admission is free with a BU ID. For more information, visit the BU Central Web site.

Travel across the Charles for the 2008 Urban Country Fair, being held at the Union Square Plaza in nearby Somerville. The fair will host arts and crafts shops, music, and dancing. Produced by Aliza Shapiro and Truth Serum Productions, the fair is from 3 to 7 p.m. at 90 Union Square, Somerville. Admission is free. Sunday, September 21
See where comedic greats like Robert Kelly and Joe Rogan got their big breaks by attending Dick Doherty’s Open Mike Night. The longest-running open mike night in Boston, Dick Doherty’s has hosted many of comedy’s legends before they hit it big. The event is for ages 18-plus, and admission is $12.
