  1. I think that logo #8 presents the clearest and most aesthetically pleasing solution. It is easily read and would remain effective when scaled up or down. I also like how it hints at the fact that it is a radio station, without hitting you over the head with it.

  2. # 8.

but honestly, these were the best logo’s we could come up with?

lots of the ones in the running look like they could have been done in MS paint….

i’ll give props to number 5 for originality/creativity, but i don’t think its what wtbu needs.

  3. Personally, I don’t believe any of the logos accomplish the mission above: We hope the logo will call attention to the fact that WTBU can be heard on the Web, on BUTV Channel 6, and on the radio in some dorms at 640 AM or 89.3 FM. With that said, however, between the choices above, I like #3 the best – it conveys the fact that it is the BU radio station.

  4. number 1 is boring, has nothing to do with a radio station. number 3 remotely does but it’s also too boring. number 8 is excellent because of it’s streamlined and modern design. the semi circle clearly represents a record, whereas number 1 has nothing to associate it with a radio station.

  5. Good design sense, clean, modern, visually appealing, distinctive, and balanced. Appropriate for radio but not cliche. It looks like the logo of a professional organization that’s organized and actually exciting to be a part of!

  6. Both #4 and #5 conjure up images of an audio board with the sliders and VU audio meters. The board is the centerpiece of any radio program where all the elements, music, voice, come together…..even if it is being transmitted over multiple platforms (radio, TV and web). Both are simple, but subtly make a statement.

  7. Number 1 is the best, I don’t know why there are two of them, but I have a feeling thats a mistake.

This contest really doesn’t make sense though, more like lets vote for you has the most friends…or who sends the most messages to people on facebook…

  8. My three favorites are #3, #4, & #8. All three are simple, and really get the message across about what WTBU is.

The reason I’m choosing #3 over the other two is because it’s simple, yet fitting. The lettering looks great, saying it’s the “Beat of Boston University” is essential, and the antennae is a nice touch as well. Plus, the antennae could mean anything. It could be a radio signal, or an Internet one. #4 & #8 are good, but I don’t like the lower case letters on #4, and the half record on #8 looks a bit archaic. So #3 is my choice.

  9. this is a cool competition! the old logo was plain and boring. regardless of anything else, I think 5 shows what WTBU is trying to represent. 7 is cool too but I would rather pick 5. definitely.

  10. Looks like some creators and their friends *cough* number 5 *cough* can’t handle a professional competition and have to resort to insulting other people’s work. Disqualification anyone?

  11. #3. It’s simple design will be able to hold strong over the years to come. BU’s comm school is prestigious and #3 really gets that across with out being stuck up.

  12. 1. i get the direction. the simple, easily duplicated path but it doesn’t convey radio, not in the slightest sense.

    2. it is way too busy and and is a little all over the place.

    3. i like this one though the font could have been different. it’s good but not quite there. it’s very nice though. good job.

    4. it is simple yet artistic. it’s very nice, maybe lacking a small detail or something. just sliiiightly bare.

    5. this is one is actually really good. the graphic and the words blend together very nicely. in a very creative way. it conveys what wtbu is and is memorable.

    6. it’s nice but it reminds me too much of the current logo and the current one is better than this one.

    7. this one is really cool. the radio antenna is very nicely done. the only problem is the manipulation of the WTBU. it could have been done better. could have made it more clear as being waves. a san serif font would have been a much better choice too.

    8. this is interesting and yet it seems to fall flat at the same time. i understand what it’s trying to convey but it doesn’t quite make it.

In conclusion haha….(besides being a dork for writing all this) i love number 5. that is my vote. good luck!

  13. some of the other logos are cool but too much for a logo. #1 is simple but it says nothing about wtbu. #5 is simple, yet innovative and not expected or obvious (cough3and7cough).

  14. 1 because it’s the only logo that will look good in both black and white. If you take away the color in the other logos they will look really weird.

  15. Number one reminds me of a project I did in grade school. It’s too simple and you cannot at all see the connection between these gross red boxes of letters and the radio station. I don’t understand why so many people like it??-it sure pays to have a trillion facebook friends!! My favorite has to be number 5; it’s fresh, unexpected, and you can definitely make the connection with the radio station.

  16. I think number 8 should win. It’s simple without being boring and it conveys a clear message – you know it’s for a radio station (unlike #1 which could be for anything). It’s nostalgic without looking too dated, but it also has a modern flair.

    Definitely #8!!!

  17. As a graduate of COM (then SPC), with 20+ years in the graphic design industry – as a designer and now as a Creative Director, here’s my 2 cents – for whatever it’s worth.

To begin with, none of these deliver on the strategic direction to convey that WTBU is widely available on a variety of media – in other words “it’s not your father’s radio station”.

    So, moving past that:
#1 – While this design is clean and can obviously work in color and black-and-white – it is generic. It could be a logo for anything. There is nothing about it that communicates what WTBU is, or what service/product WTBU provides.

#2 The type treatment is hard to read and at reduced sizes, the rules between the concentric circles will plug up and not reproduce cleanly. Also, the imagery is evocative of a vinyl disc – which is dated.

#3 While this is clean and denotes the idea of frequency transmission it looks a bit to corporate for a college radio station. Perhaps an edgier or more contemporary type treatment would take this to the next level.

#4 This is visually appealing and denotes a radio dial – but the weight of the type is too thin, particularly the word “radio” – rendering this hard to read at this size and would be illegible at a smaller size. If the type was made a bit heavier this would be a nice option.

#5 This is my personal favorite (remember this is all subjective). The type treatment is strong, clean and legible and the imagery communicates frequency and transmission. The execution integrates the typography with the imagery, while still keeping it legible.

#6 This is also a bit generic – it could be for a variety of companies/industries. The type treatment is too corporate and the end paretheses graphic, while it was probably meant to convey frequency and commission does not come across that way.

#7 This looks like the RKO radio tower – which is even before my time, and while retro can be re-worked to be modern and contemporary – this doesn’t do it. The type treatment is also a bit pedestrian.

#8 This looks like it was used in the 60’s. Again, retro can be re-worked to be modern and contemporary, but this just looks a bit tired and old.

  18. 1 is clear cut, and can be used forever.
2 is alright, but the record theme is pretty old hat
3 is nice, could see that being used
    4 i dont really get
5 people seem to like, but it looks really awkward to me and you would have to clean up the dials before putting it on stuff
6 is a neat idea but not executed cleanly
    7 would look weird reprodcued
8 i like, dont know why but i like it

overall i gotta go with 1 because it will last

  19. 1 is too boring and could stand for anything and also the serif font makes it look more corporate. 2 is all over the place 3. is decent, a little too plain 4. is good, maybe if the letters were bigger? 5. conveys radio in an artistic way, very good 6. looks a little disjointed for some reason 7. too typical 8 it’s cool in an old 70s type of way (my rankings: 5,4,3,7,8,6,1,2)

  20. why is everyone obsessing over 1? can it even be used since it’s used for the logo for TLC channel and looks similar to NPR. pretty unoriginal… no? 5 is fun, innovative and simple with a clear cut message. i love it.

  21. Is it just me or do almost all the votes for number one seem to be the same? maybe a certain someone is spending too much time at the computer….ANYWAY, I vote for 6, I dig the radio waves.

  22. Number 8 is the most interesting and aesthetically pleasing. It’s very clear and simple, yet, it also has the record in the design which makes it standout. I would possibly take out the word ‘student’ though. Besides that, it is by far the best choice.

  23. very interesting that after the poll was said to be closed, the “people” who voted like crazy for number 1 stopped doing it but the people who randomly fell on to this site afterwards were voting for other ones and number 1 is nowhere to be found. i just find it interesting :) I VOTE FOR NUMBER 6!!
