A Busy Weekend and Monday, Teased by Danny
Traffic advisories around moving in, Matriculation, and maybe a storm
Move-in, Red Sox games, Matriculation, and the chance of a hurricane on the doorstep promise to make this weekend interesting, busy, and possibly trying.
Meteorologists now predict that Danny, strengthening in the Atlantic, will pass by southern New England on Saturday evening, bringing wind and rain to the Boston area.
Peter Fiedler, vice president for administrative services, says students delayed because of the weather will be able to move in whenever they get here. If Saturday’s winds are fierce, University officials advise students already on campus to stay inside and ask their RAs for guidance — taking to the streets wearing garbage-bag raincoats is not sound in loco parentis advice. Most residence halls have backup power sources, and the University has stockpiled water and flashlights, which will be distributed as needed. Dining Services will continue to serve meals at regular hours. Meteorologists predict that if the storm does hit the Boston area, it will have picked up speed and will exit for the Maritimes by midnight Saturday.
For updates and advisories as Danny approaches, check back with BU Today through the weekend. The women’s 6 p.m. soccer game at Nickerson Field against UMass Amherst on Sunday, August 30, is still on, as is the pregame tailgate.
Monday’s Matriculation ceremony and walk are expected to begin as scheduled.
Led by Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore, the walk begins at Danielsen Hall, 512 Beacon St., at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at the Track and Tennis Center, 100 Ashford St., just before the 10 a.m. Matriculation ceremony, the University’s formal welcome to new students. Commuters are encouraged to avoid the BU Bridge on Monday morning.
More than 4,000 members of the Class of 2013 will participate in the tradition that precedes the ceremony. The walk’s route includes Bay State Road, Commonwealth Avenue between Granby and Babcock Streets, and Babcock Street.
Additional traffic advisories are in place for the weekend as students move in:
Harry Agganis Way will be one-way, entering from Commonwealth Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 29.
Buick Street will be one-way, exiting onto Commonwealth Avenue (enter from Agganis Way) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Bay State Road will be open from August 24 through August 31, with motor vehicle as well as pedestrian access. On Tuesday, September 1, ongoing underground utility work will resume, and the street will be closed to motor vehicle traffic between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Parking in West Campus lots and garages will be closed to permit holders on Saturday and Sunday to accommodate students arriving at the new high-rise residence hall Student Village II. Alternative parking for permit holders will be available at 730-750 Commonwealth Ave., the School of Management garage, and in alley spaces along Bay State Road.
Boston University Police officers will be posted at locations around campus to assist with traffic throughout the weekend and into Monday.
