A Whole New Posse
Shiney James mentors the next Posse crew
After almost a decade working at the University’s orientation office, Shiney James has a new role.
James (CAS’99), the director of orientation, will mentor the second wave of Posse scholars, who will attend BU this fall. Students from the Atlanta area were selected by the Posse Foundation, a national, nonprofit program that recruits and trains groups of talented urban youth for life at colleges and universities around the country. Through its partnership with the Posse Foundation, the University awards a four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarship to each Posse scholar.
They’re expected to arrive on campus for an initial lay of the land today.
Once everyone returns for the fall semester, James will meet with the entire Posse of freshmen on a weekly basis and with individual scholars every two weeks. “My role will be to empower them and to clarify things for them,” she says.
She will also try to encourage a sense of community, something every good Posse should have. This camaraderie will help with the transition into college life, she says, adding, “These folks are from the same area. That culture shock of coming to BU together is something they can communicate about.”
James already does a lot of mentoring, and is excited to take this on. “I have a fascination with building community,” she says.
