BU Retains America East Commissioner’s Cup
Class of 2009 leaves BU as part of athletics program that’s won AE Commissioner’s Cup four consecutive years
For the fourth consecutive year and the seventh time in the past eight years, Boston University has captured the America East Stuart P. Haskell, Jr., Commissioner’s Cup as the top athletic program in the conference. The winner was announced June 9, during the league’s annual meeting.
The Terriers, who won a conference-best seven championships, four regular-season titles, and four runner-up finishes during the 2008-2009 season, tallied 396 points, the most in four years under the current scoring system and the most overall since earning 426 points during the 2001-2002 campaign.
The University at Albany–SUNY placed second for the third straight year, with 353 points, just ahead of Binghamton University, which claimed third for the second time in three years, with 339 points.
“Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches, and staff on yet another banner year in Terrier athletics,” says Mike Lynch, BU’s director of athletics. “This is the punctuation of not only a terrific year of competition, but also the culmination for a senior class ending their collegiate careers having won four consecutive Commissioner’s Cups.”
BU swept the regular-season and tournament titles in three different sports: men’s and women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse. The Terriers also won championships in women’s indoor track and field, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, and softball.
The women’s basketball team made history of its own as the regular-season champion and became the fourth squad in America East to complete the conference slate unbeaten. The Terriers also earned runner-up finishes in women’s hoops, women’s cross country, men’s swimming and diving, and golf.
The Commissioner’s Cup is named in honor of Stuart P. Haskell, Jr., the first America East commissioner, who was commissioner from 1987 until his retirement in 1997. The cup is now in its 20th year, and BU has won it a total of 9 times, finishing as runner-up 7 times. The Terriers have never come in lower than third in the point standings.
