Stop by for free coffee as BU celebrates going green
Every year Americans throw away close to 25 billion Styrofoam cups, enough to circle the Earth 436 times, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Reusable coffee mugs can prevent billions of Styrofoam cups from clogging up landfills.
BU will host a Green Day on Wednesday, February 4, part of National Green Week. Green Day is a nationwide environmental awareness campaign that aims to mobilize students to participate in green curriculum and a waste reduction program designed to eliminate 1,000 tons of trash.
Throughout the day, free reusable coffee mugs, donated by Green Mountain Coffee, will be distributed at the George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Ave. Student clubs will showcase environmental exhibits, including biking, engineering, gardening, photography, and energy conservation. Students will also participate in a follow-up online survey to measure their continued reusable mug use one month after BU Green Day to determine their success in reshaping their coffee-drinking habits.
“By participating in BU Green Day, students will learn that simple decisions such as the utilization of reusable travel mugs can combat monumental environmental problems,” says Roberta Goldschneider, executive director of the Green Education Foundation. “Young adults are in the best position to impact the future of our environment by developing green behaviors that become lifelong habits.”
Schedule of events:
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Free Green Mountain reusable mugs will be distributed in the GSU Link, at the Boston University Women’s Resource Center (GSU Basement), and in GSU’s second floor lobby. Free coffee will also be available in the Women’s Resource Center and the second floor lobby.
3 to 7 p.m.
Cast your “coffee bean vote” for your favorite student exhibit on the second floor of the GSU.
5:30 p.m.
Stop by for the awards presentation to the group that shows the most sustainable green innovation. The film Flow: For the Love of Water will also be shown in the second floor theater of the GSU.
Green Day will take place on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. The event is cosponsored by the Green Education Foundation, Green Mountain Coffee, and the Sargent College Rotaract Club.
