Help for the Career-minded
Kimberly DelGizzo is the new director of BU Career Services

Most of the students who visit Career Services are juniors and seniors. But Kimberly DelGizzo wants students to start thinking about their future much sooner.
“I think that many students wait until their junior, even senior year, when they are looking for internships,” says DelGizzo, who became director of Career Services in June. “I want to encourage my staff to get students to think about career development before that. We need to encourage students as early as freshmen year to come to us and start their career development through self-assessment, career exploration, reality testing, and development strategies.”
Career Services offers a variety of workshops and services. Students can get help choosing a major, exploring an academic or career direction, learning how to conduct a job or an internship search, honing interviewing skills, and writing a résumé. The office offers consultations by appointment (but also has walk-in sessions), career workshops, on-campus recruiting, employer information sessions, and a library for career research. Students can also attend the Fall Career Expo today, October 15, in the GSU.
DelGizzo, who has more than 20 years of experience in human services and career development, previously was associate dean of the college and director of the Career Development Center at Brown University. At Brown, she oversaw the relocation and renovation of the office and improved the connections between students’ career and academic development. Before working at Brown, she was associate director of career services at Harvard University and director of career services at Stonehill College.
In her new job, DelGizzo says, she plans to strengthen the resources and services provided to students and collaborate with the Educational Resource Center. She also hopes to better organize the office, increase the size of the staff, and make the office accessible to students.
”When I was hired,” she says, “I was offered this opportunity and encouraged to take this incredibly dedicated and hardworking staff and increase the visibility of the office on campus, as well as build the office and operations in new and innovative ways.”
The Career Services Fall Career Expo takes place today, October 15, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom, 775 Commonwealth Ave.
