Human Rights Issues in Communist China
BU Chapter of Amnesty International sponsors lecture on China tonight

China expert Merle Goldman will talk tonight about human rights from the perspective of Chinese history and how the Chinese Communist Party deals with human rights issues, sponsored by the BU chapter of Amnesty International. The College of Arts & Sciences professor emerita of history has written several books on China, among them Sowing the Seeds of Democracy in China.
Students interested in history, culture, and politics can join Goldman as she speaks about Chinese history and politics. “I just want students to be aware that China is in a dynamic economy,” she says. “It’s just beginning to grow. However, politically, the Chinese Communist party is still persecuting people who are against government practices.”
Goldman taught early and modern Chinese history at BU for almost 30 years. She is currently part of Asia Watch, a division of Human Rights Watch. She became interested in China when she was earning a Ph.D. at Harvard University.
Goldman’s lecture, which begins at 6 p.m., will be held tonight, March 24, in the basement of the College of Arts & Sciences.
