SDM Professor Anthony A. Gianelly, 72
Anthony A. Gianelly, chair ad interim of the department of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, died on May 28. He was 72. He had been chair of the department from 1968 to 2003 and chair ad interim since 2007.
Born in Boston, Gianelly (GRS’67, MED’74) lived in Waban. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1957 from Harvard College, where he was on the football, track, and rugby teams. He received a DMD degree from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1961 and a certificate of advanced graduate study in orthodontics from the Harvard/Forsyth Dental Center in 1963. He earned a Ph.D. in biology and biochemistry from Boston University in 1967 and an M.D. from the School of Medicine in 1974.
Gianelly began his career as a research fellow in orthodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1963. He was appointed an associate professor of orthodontics at the School of Dental Medicine in 1967 and became a full professor in 1969.
He held numerous nonacademic appointments throughout his career, coauthored 90 journal articles between 1965 and 2007, and authored or coauthored 3 books.
Gianelly also received many awards, most recently the 2009 Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Teachers and Research Award, presented in May. GSDM awarded him the Spencer N. Frankl Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Ernestine (Painter); a son, Todd; a daughter, Lisa, and her husband, Jeff Levinson; and two grandsons, William and Matthew Levinson. His brother, Ralph, also a doctor, predeceased him.
