Jewelry Sale Benefits Abused Women
85 Broads hosts Valentine’s Day jewelry sale in the GSU Link
Join members of BU’s 85 Broads as they hold a jewelry sale to help Emerge, a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization based dually in Bostonand Sri Lanka that enables girls and women who have survived abuse tobecome entrepreneurial jewelry designers. The organization’s therapeutic jewelry workshop provides supplies, training, and support and emphasizes personal discovery, mentorship, and businessknowledge, while generating savings for them.
"These women are faced with getting kicked out of their homes and getting thrown in the prison system if they choose to face their attackers in courts,” says Lauren O’Toole (CAS’08, SMG’08), cofounder of BU’s chapter of 85 Broads, a finance and networking group for women, and the development officer for Emerge. “The organization has such an incredible impact on their lives.”
The unique beaded jewelry is created in Sri Lanka and then shipped to the United States. Different types of jewelry, including five-strand necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, will be for sale.
The jewelry sale will be held in the GSU Link on Thursday, February 12, and Friday, February 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to support Emerge. For more information, click here.
