Lacrosse Team Heads to the Nationals
Terriers make it five straight America East wins
The Boston University lacrosse team captured its fifth straight America East championship with a 16-6 triumph over the New Hampshire Wildcats on Saturday, May 2, at Nickerson Field. The 12th-ranked Terriers travel to upstate New York to face seventh-seeded Syracuse (13-4) in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday, May 10, at 3:30 p.m.
The Terriers are the first team in America East history to win five straight women’s lacrosse championships and have now captured eight overall, more than all other teams combined. BU will be appearing in the NCAA tournament for the seventh time and the fifth year in a row.
Sarah Dalton’s 6 goals followed a 5-goal performance in the semifinals for a tournament-record 11 total goals. With 86 goals this season, Dalton (CGS’07, CAS’09) leads the nation and broke her own BU single-season record of 71 goals, set last season. The America East Conference unanimously voted her the America East Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Year, an honor she earned last year as well.
Dalton was joined on the All-Tournament Team by McKinley Curro (CGS’08, COM’10), midfielder Corcoran Downey (SAR’11), and defender Kelly Munroe (COM’09). Curro scored three goals and added three assists in the title game. Xan Weitzel (SAR’10) chipped in a goal and four assists. Rachel Collins (CAS’11) and Stephanie Walker (COM’09) each scored a pair of goals, while Erica Baumgartner (SHA’10) and Alyssa Kovach (SMG’11) also got on the board. Rachel Klein (CAS’09) made eight saves in net, allowing only six goals.
Walker opened the scoring just over two minutes into the contest, but Wildcat Sarah Von Bargen leveled the score soon after. Then the Terriers reeled off eight unanswered goals. The Wildcats got a pair back within the half’s final five minutes, but Dalton struck with the final tally of the first to give the Terriers a 10-3 lead at the break.
Dalton and Baumgartner scored in the first six minutes of the second half and another three-goal spurt (a tally from Collins and two from Dalton) made the score 15-4 with 8:35 to go. The Wildcats managed two more goals down the stretch, but a final score from Collins restored a 10-goal margin for the Terriers.
