Police, Fire Respond to Babcock Street

An electrical fire at 270 Babcock St. drew emergency responders from Boston and BU and temporarily closed nearby streets to traffic on Friday morning. The fire broke out in apartment 12D of the building, known as Babcock Towers. The resident, who is not affiliated with Boston University, was not at home, and no injuries were reported.
The fire was caused by a pinched cord in the apartment’s air-conditioning unit, according to Joe McMahon, the district fire chief.
Sgt. Larry Manning of the BU Police says that smoke was visible on the Gardner Street side of the building when the Boston police and fire departments arrived on the scene, within three minutes of receiving the call. He says the smoke and water damage to the apartment is estimated at $20,000.
Sasan Faraja, a 12th-floor resident, arrived on his floor to find heavy smoke in the hallway, and he began knocking on his neighbors’ doors to alert them. He says he was not concerned about any potential damage to his own property. “As long as people get out all right, everything else can be replaced,” he says.
BU spokesman Colin Riley says that residents were allowed back into the building at approximately 10:15 a.m.
