Red Hot Hockey Is a Big Hit in the Big Apple
With Madison Square Garden sold out, live streaming’s a consolation
Madison Square Garden, the big venue in the Big Apple, is sold out on Saturday night, November 28, which might not be news if the Knicks or Rangers were playing, but the weekend’s red hot ticket is for Red Hot Hockey — Boston University versus Cornell.
Terrier fans who don’t have tickets do have some consolation: the game will stream live on the Athletics Department Web site.
The Thanksgiving weekend extravaganza is a reprise of a 2007 encounter, which was the first collegiate game in Garden history to sell out. BU sent Cornell packing, 6-3.
The seeds of the BU-Cornell rivalry were sown in January 1925, with a 7-2 Terrier victory. More than four decades later, the teams faced off in two NCAA title games: Cornell won in 1967, BU triumphed in 1972. After BU left the ECAC to join Hockey East in 1984, the teams met only a few times before the 2007 premier Red Hot Hockey match at the Garden.
“We’re looking forward to another sellout and having a great opportunity to connect once again with our alumni in the New York City area,” says Mike Lynch, BU assistant vice president and director of athletics. “The first Red Hot Hockey game was a tremendous success, and this year’s event will be bigger and better all around.”
Men’s head hockey coach Jack Parker (SMG’68, Hon.’97), who led his team to the 2009 NCAA championship last April, says he knows “that our team is excited to face a Cornell team that is one of the best in the country this season.”
“And,” says Andy Noel, from Cornell University’s physical education program, “I’m thrilled to continue the great rivalry with Boston University.”
Those fortunate enough to have tickets will show their Terrier Pride before the game at the Red Hot Hockey Pep Rally, the official meeting place for BU alumni, students, and parents. The rally, which begins rinkside at 6 p.m., will feature a buffet of standard fan fare, including red-hot hot dogs. There will be a cash bar, with the BU Pep Band setting the mood. And, of course, Rhett will make a special appearance.
And then, the puck drops at 8 p.m.
