Secret Scavengers
Banditos Misteriosos brings out the mischievous in Bostonians

Feeling playful?
Do you have a “capacity for selective immaturity”? Do you enjoy pillow fights, squirt guns, and generally acting like a fool? Join fellow Bostonians this Saturday in a test of knowledge, skill, and speed, as the enigmatic Banditos Misteriosos host their second annual citywide scavenger hunt.
Banditos Misteriosos is an anonymous organization dedicated to bringing out the sense of fun in Boston-area residents. Since beginning last summer, the banditos have covertly planned a water gun battle (to celebrate the city’s revolutionary spirit), a “monster mashup,” a free-form gift swap, a silent dance party, and two pillow fights. Last year’s scavenger hunt attracted more than 400 hunters; the most recent event, April’s second annual pillow fight, brought out a crowd of more than 1,000.
Other than pure whimsy, the banditos say their gatherings attempt to get Bostonians participating in ways that are out of the ordinary, using the city’s great public spaces.
To give people a heads up about an event, Banditos Misteriosos posts it, along with time and place (the latter announced the night before), on the group’s Web site and Facebook group (which numbers 1,800-plus people). The invitation is consistent: come out and “act like fools.”
The scavenger hunt was set to begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 20, the starting location to be revealed at midnight tonight. But Mother Nature is feeling playful, too; severe thunderstorm warnings from the National Weather Service have scared even the intrepid banditos, who have announced that they are postponing their event until Saturday, July 11. The starting location, a spot in Boston, will be revealed here the night before. Like all banditos’ events, the scavenger hunt will be free, safe (weather cooperating), and open to all ages.
