  1. Unfortunately, not all universities have the same funding models. Endowment levels vary widely, and where state universities dominate, remaining funding is dependent on the whims of state legislatures and governors. Where I live, the university long ago cut formal connections with the major museums, orchestras, public radio, public television and every other major cultural institution (which has worked out quite well, by the way), so that line of argument fails. Internal and external politics and academics’ frequent lack of connection to the real world don’t suggest to me that the model of university-newspaper marriages serves the best interest of newspapers. Many of the other ideas suggested here have merit, but to the question posed in the headline, I would say “NO!”
