The video above has a snippet of one of the bands featured on a DVD being distributed free at Splash this year. Find the BU Today table, and you’ll find the full DVD. The attractions include a Robo Surfer (riding an inflatable surfboard like a mechanical bull), pedestal jousting, a bungee run, and bungee extreme (jump 40 feet up). With all the games and giveaways, it looks like a carnival.
Splash is the quasi-official start of the BU school year. A record number of student clubs (almost 200) are participating, upping the tempo and recruiting new students. After Matriculation, this is when life as a Terrier takes off, with the smell of barbecue drifting across West Campus as students flood Nickerson Field.
Mingle with the Ballroom Dance club or exchange e-mails with MacBU fanatics. Greek aficionados will be there, as will everyone from a cappella singers to the Darfur Coalition, women’s ultimate Frisbee players, cancer fighters, synchronized swimmers, the Red Cross, you name it — with lots of free food to keep everyone’s strength up. Along with student groups, 45 University departments will be represented, 20 athletic organizations, and 10 non-University vendors happy to introduce themselves to the student body.
“We’re hoping, first, for a sunny day,” says Justin Touchette (COM’11), student consultant in charge of Splash. “And then, we hope that every freshman will get involved and find at least one organization to connect with.”
Here’s just one example of some of the great “merch” on hand: BU Today is giving away a cool DVD of a series of sessions featuring homegrown BU bands, recorded live last year. So stop by our booth — and while you’re there, snag someone at BU Central, next table over, and tell them a joke; you just might win a pair of tickets to a big comedy show coming to Central later in September.
Splash runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nickerson Field in West Campus. Looking for a little preview and direction? Browse clubs ahead of time on the Student Activities Web site.
