The Games Behind the Game
Men’s hockey recipe for success: three taps to the chest, a bracelet for a friend
Click on the slide show above to hear how hockey captains John McCarthy (CAS’09) and Matt Gilroy (MET’09) prepare for game day.
Boston University men’s hockey is now the top-ranked team in the country — and riding high after Monday’s 4-3 win over Harvard in the Beanpot opener. How do the Terriers do it? Skill, strength, endurance, teamwork, and solid coaching are all part of the mix, but a good chunk of winning comes from believing you can win. Exactly how a team conjures up that confidence is often one of its best kept secrets. In the slide show above, hockey captains John McCarthy (CAS’09) and Matt Gilroy (MET’09) talk about pregame routines, superstition, and the importance of having fun on the ice.
The Terriers take on the University of Lowell next, on Friday, February 6, at Agganis Arena at 7 p.m.
On Monday, February 9, the Beanpot championship pits BU against Northeastern. Face-off is at 8 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Garden. The consolation game sees Harvard grappling with BC, at 5 p.m.
