World’s Best Trumpet Players Face Off at Tsai
Reprising music on campus: International competition showcased many styles
Watch the slide show above to hear Terry Everson talk about what makes a trumpet player the best in the world.
Celebrating the belief that it is musicians, as much as ballplayers, who really know the score, our musical coverage over the past school year ranged across multiple octaves of style, personality, and performance. This week, we’re reprising a handful of those offerings: literary encores.
Let the trumpets sound! During a weekend last October, Boston University hosted the final rounds of the 2008 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition, the world’s premier forum for trumpet soloists. The inaugural competition, launched 20 years ago at Ohio State University, was won by Terry Everson, a College of Fine Arts associate professor of music. In the slide show above, Everson gives us the backstory about that winning performance and talks about what makes a trumpet player the best in the world.
Eight finalists from countries all over the world, including BU alum Kevin Maloney (CFA’05), were judged by three jurors. The competition’s first round was October 9. The final concert took place on October 12 at the Tsai Performance Center.
The 2008 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition, with a first prize of $10,000 and a second prize of $5,000, was administered by the International Trumpet Guild, sponsored by the guild and the Columbus Foundation.
