Comm Ave Fair and Sidewalk Sam
Games and giveaways galore
A Moon Bounce. Snow cones. Live music. And best of all, free swag. It’s all part of the Comm Ave Fair, a back-to-school party for all students on Tuesday, August 31. The event, coordinated by the Office of the Dean of Students and various schools, colleges, and University departments, officially kicks off the 2010–2011 school year.
“The Comm Ave Fair is a way to make it easier for new students to connect with the community, and a way for our academic departments to engage with students,” says Kenneth Elmore, dean of students. “Students will see the real, practical, and enjoyable applications of the academic opportunities on campus. The event is another way to strengthen the University community at large.”
The events will take place along Commonwealth Avenue, starting at the School of Management and extending all the way to Agganis Arena. Each group participating in the fair was asked to showcase what makes it unique.
Following are just some of Tuesday’s fair events. A full list is available here.
- Ready for recess before classes even begin? Then head on over to the Metcalf Science Center plaza, 590 Commonwealth Ave., where the School of Education will offer team-building exercises (some involving minor acrobatics), an invention-building contest, jump-rope and hula-hoop contests, chalk artwork, and temporary tattoos. They’ll also be giving out free popcorn, cotton candy, juice boxes, and other snacks.
- Have ambitions to be famous? The College of Communication, 640 Commonwealth Ave., will host a webisodes challenge on the COM lawn, and results will be aired on the COM student network, BUTV10. Prizes will be awarded. Not ready for the limelight? The college will also have snow cones, a Moon Bounce, and DJing by COM’s student radio station, WTBU.
- If you’re a NASCAR fan, consider stopping by the Science and Engineering Program, 808 Commonwealth Ave., to catch the toy racecar-building contest. Teams of two will create toy racecars using supplies provided by the college, such as CDs and a mousetrap. Each member of the team whose car travels the farthest distance will win an iPod touch.
- And if baseball’s your thing, make sure to visit the George Sherman Union. The Student Activities Office will host a mini-Fenway on the GSU Plaza, complete with a batting cage, baseball-themed carnival games, and a mini Green Monster. They’ll be offering free baseball fare, such as peanuts, Cracker Jack, and lemonade. You can also purchase Red Sox tickets. The Hot Tamale Band will provide music.
