BU’s Dear Abbeys perform with the Tufts Beelzebubs
Warning: this is men at their manliest.
Or so claims the BU Dear Abbeys website about tomorrow night’s concert, Men Being Manly. For the event, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, the Dear Abbeys, BU’s only all-male a cappella group, joins vocal forceswith the Beelzebubs, the all-male a cappella group of Tufts University.
The Abbeys, as they’re affectionately referred to, have collected several a cappella awards since their formation in 1992. In 2005, they won the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella in New York. They regularly perform to packed houses on the BU campus and beyond.
Tomorrow’s concert is described as the groups’ “duel to proclaim their supreme manliness,” but really, says Steven Oranges (SMG’12), Dear Abbeys business manager, it isn’t about competition. The performance offers “the opportunity for two well-established all-male a cappella groups to get together and do what we like doing best: entertaining others,” Oranges says.
The Beelzebubs, who became well-known last year when they placed second on NBC’s competitive a cappella show The Sing Off, echo Oranges’ sentiment.
“Our motto is fun through song—we never look at our performances as competition,” says Tufts junior Evan Powell, Beelzebubs business manager. Powell says the Abbeys are “another great all-guy group in Boston, and its always fun to have more friends in the a cappella community.”
Men Being Manly takes place Saturday, November 13, at 8 p.m. at the College of General Studies Jacob Sleeper Auditorium, 871 Commonwealth Ave. Tickets are $5, and are available at the door and also on sale Friday, November 12, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the George Sherman Union Link, 775 Commonwealth Ave. The event is open to the public.
Also, tonight check out BU Night of A Cappella to see several of BU’s a cappella groups perform. The concert is Friday, November 12, at 7 p.m. at Jacob Sleeper Auditorium, 871 Commonwealth Ave. Tickets, available atthe door, are $5.
