New Year, New Stuff To Do
From tutoring to hockey, skiing to brew tours
If one New Year’s resolution is to do more good deeds, get started by volunteering at 826 Boston, a center that helps kids learn to express themselves by writing. The nonprofit 826 has locations in other cities as well. A get-together on Tuesday, January 5, offers basic information about volunteering, and if you like what you hear about anything from tutoring to helping on the Web site, you can stay for an hourlong training session.
826 Boston is at 3035 Washington St., Roxbury. The information session on January 5 begins at 5:30 p.m. Directions are available here; the center is accessible by MBTA: Orange Line to either Jackson Square or Stony Brook.
Unless you live in an off-campus cave, you’re aware of the BU v. BC Hockey Game at Fenway Park on Friday, January 8. Tickets are long gone, but you can attend the official watch party at Tequila Rain, right across the street from Fenway; $10 gets you admission to Tequila Rain, a free drink, appetizers, and a souvenir. And then, who knows, you might get lucky and bump into someone with an extra ticket.

Next New Year’s resolution: exercise more. So go skiing! Ski Market offers bus trips to some of the best mountains in New England. On Sunday, January 10, it’s organized a trip to Sugarbush in Vermont. Tickets are $79 for the roundtrip bus ride and lift ticket.
The bus leaves at 5:30 a.m. from Ski Market, 808 Commonwealth Ave., and reservations are recommended. To make reservations, call 617-731-6100 and have a valid credit card ready.
A German law in 1516 required that beer have only four ingredients: water, yeast, malt, and hops. The more complex beers of today (Dogfish’s 90 Minute IPA, anyone?) may add some additional items, but the basics haven’t changed. To find out more, go on a brewery tour at Samuel Adams Brewery or Harpoon Brewery. Both offer daily tours and tastings, and while visitors don’t have to be over 21 to attend, they must be 21 to take part in the best part of all: sampling the product.
