Star Power Illuminates Winterfest 2010
Annual celebration draws hundreds of Terriers back to campus
More than 800 Terriers and their friends and families cameback to campus for BU’s fifth annual Winterfest, which offered Alumni College classes, ice sculpting, ice hockey — and more.
The event kicked off on Friday, January 22, with a panel discussion of the work of film director Robert Altman that included actors Elliott Gould, Sally Kellerman, and Michael Murphy. The evening, Robert Altman: Celebration of an American Icon, marked the 40th anniversary of Altman’s film M*A*S*H and the publication of the book Robert Altman: the Oral Biography by Mitchell Zuckoff, a College of Communication professor of journalism.
Saturday’s Alumni College classes included a session on thefoods of Lombardy, Italy, taught by food stylist Lisa Falso, in thedemonstration kitchen at 808 Commonwealth Ave. Falso whipped up anItalian-style grilled cheese, replacing the bread with polenta, risotto allaMilanese, breaded pork slices with lemon wedges, and amaretti cookies. The kidsin attendance, wearing aprons with the words “Cooking Up Culture,” had a chanceto help, stirring the polenta, sautéing onions, and mixing up cookie batter.
The afternoon featured dance performances by Dheem, BU’sClassical Indian Arts Association; Step About Boston, the Irish step dancingteam; and the Filipino Student Association. Outside, on the Agganis Arenapromenade, teams chipped away at tall columns of ice. The weekend ended with amen’s ice hockey game at Agganis Arena. The Terriers fell to the UNH Wildcats,4-1.
Natasha Lewin (SMG’07) and Allison Dalton (CAS’05, SED’05,’09), members of the Young Alumni Club, said Winterfest is a chance to make new friends. As Dalton looked over the group’s final sketches for the ice sculpting session — one of Rhett holding a gold medal and flashing a number-one sign, the other of a BC Eagle with a broken leg and a crutch — she said, “It’sa lot of fun. And it’s a nice opportunity to do something you would never get to do.”
