Women Terriers Lose in Shootout
Heartbreaker: Down four, they come back, but not all the way
Erasing a 4-0 deficit to force overtime in the women’s Beanpot semifinal match-up with Northeastern, Boston University’s women ice hockey team lost in a tie-breaking shootout to the Huskies last night at Bright Hockey Center. Junior Holly Lorms tallied two goals for the Terriers, while senior Melissa Anderson capped the rally with a goal midway through the third.
Northeastern now advances to next week’s Beanpot title game.
The Huskies glided to a 3-0 lead after the first period, adding a fourth goal just 2:35 into the second to take a commanding lead. Freshman goaltender Alissa Fromkin, who replaced senior Melissa Haber after the first period, stopped every shot after, until the shootout.
BU finally got on the board at 11:31 of the second period with Lorms’ first tally of the night and entered the third period with a 4-1 deficit.
Junior Lauren Cherewyk and Lorms ignited the Terrier bench and their fans with goals in the early stages of the third. Anderson drew the Terriers even at 10:38 of the period. Each team had a scoring opportunity in overtime, but neither converted, and the teams headed to a shootout. Northeastern struck first when freshman Rachel Llanes scored from inside the left post, followed by the clincher from Junior Alyssa Wohlfeiler.
And with that, a thrilling, improbable comeback fell short.
In the final round of the women’s Beanpot tournament, the BU women’sice hockey team will fight for third place at 5 p.m. February 9 at Bright HockeyCenter, 79 N. Harvard St., Cambridge.
