Women’s Soccer Falls to BC in NCAA First Round
Terriers finish season with a 16-6 record
Two second-half goals gave second-seeded Boston College (14-6-1) all the offense it needed to beat the number-17 BU women’s soccer team 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Tiya Gallegos (SAR’12) tallied BU’s lone goal as the Terriers finished their season Friday night at BC’s Newton Campus soccer field with an overall record of 16-6.
BU, which broke school records for wins in a season (16), goals (50), shutouts (15), and consecutive shutouts (13), outshot BC, 12-8, forcing BC’s Jill Mastroianni to make three saves.
Lisa Kevorkian (COM’12) led with four shots, followed by Jessica Luscinski (SAR’12) and Gallegos, with two shots apiece. Goalkeepers Kelly King (CAS’14) and Alice Binns (SAR’12) split time in net. King was not tested in the first half, and Binns made two spectacular stops in the second.
Gallegos scored in the 13th minute when she followed up on a rebound off her own shot. Krista Minto (CGS’10, COM’12) sent a cross into the 18-yard box that Gallegos one-timed toward Mastroianni, who kick-saved it. Gallegos followed up on the rebound and drilled it into the netting for her eighth goal of the year.
For the rest of the first half, the Terriers played outstanding defense, allowing just one off-target shot. BU controlled the tempo of the game during the first 45 minutes and wore down BC’s defense.
In the second half, the Eagles came out firing on all cylinders, taking it to BU’s defense from the get-go and drawing two corner kicks within the first 15 minutes.
Binns came up big in the second half, with two shutout-preserving saves, one diving and one leaping to her right. Bad luck struck in the 77th minute, when BC’s Victoria DiMartino knotted the game 1-1, bending it from the upper far post. Julia Bouchelle upped the Eagles’ lead to 2-1 five minutes later, with her first goal of the year.
BC took Sunday’s NCAA second round game, 3-1, against Hofstra, also held at the Newton Campus soccer field.
