Jazz, Documentaries, and Theater
Whether you’re a jazz aficionado or new to the genre, check out Riffs & Raps: Jazzin’ the Generations, a free jazz concert sponsored by the Boston Public Library. The concert will trace jazz from its roots in blues and spirituals to the present. Standards as well as new compositions will be performed by musicians Arni Cheatham (saxophone), Bill Lowe (bass trombone, tuba, percussion), and Kevin Harris (keyboard).
Riffs & Raps: Jazzin’ the Generations is at the Faneuil Branch of the Boston Public Library, 419 Faneuil St., Brighton, tonight at 6:30 p.m.; free and open to the public. The library is accessible by T; take the No. 57 Bus from the Kenmore Square T station to Brighton Center, walk up Academy Hill Road, and the library is next to the Courthouse.
Interested in documentaries and in the plight of refugees? You might want to head to City Year’s headquarters to watch a screening of Pushing the Elephant. Originally aired on PBS’s Independent Lens, the documentary is the story of a woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo who was imprisoned with her family in the 1990s as a result of the country’s ethnic violence and later settled in Arizona. The film is a deeply personal account of her efforts to rebuild both her country and her family. A panel discussion about Boston’s refugee community follows the screening.
Pushing the Elephant will be shown in the Lavine Civic Forum at City Year Headquarters, 287 Columbus Ave., Boston, tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sponsored by ITVS Community Cinema in partnership with Boston Cares and City Year, the screening is free. View the film’s theatrical trailer here.
Fans of Ernest Hemingway’s first major novel, The Sun Also Rises, now have a chance to see the work come to life onstage at the Paramount Theatre in a production by the New York theater ensemble Elevator Repair Service, which memorably brought to life another literary classic, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, last year, with Gatz. Titled The Select (The Sun Also Rises), the new play debuted at the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival and begins a weeklong run tonight here in Boston.
The Select (The Sun Also Rises) is at the Paramount Theater, 44 Charles St., Boston, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, March 15 to 17; 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19; 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20. Tickets range from $25 to $65; student rush tickets are sold the day of the show for $15. More information about the show can be found here.
