The music of Ireland, prints from South Africa
If you can’t get to New York today for the St. Patrick’s Day parade along Fifth Avenue, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day here in town. The Boston Public Library’s West End branch is hosting an Irish Heritage Month Party, featuring Irish music and refreshments. The South End Library Recorder Ensemble, which specializes in medieval, renaissance, and baroque music, will be performing tonight at 6 p.m.
The Irish Heritage Month party is tonight, March 17, at the West End Branch of the Boston Public Library, 151 Cambridge St., Boston, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
If you’re still in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit, head over to the Paradise Lounge, where you can catch the Irish folk band High Kings. The versatile group plays up to 13 different instruments and will be performing Irish classics as well as original songs.
The High Kings are performing tonight, March 17, at the Paradise Rock Club, 967 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance online. More information about the High Kings can be found here.
If the luck of the Irish isn’t your thing, there’s still time to see two related exhibitions on campus through March 27: South Africa: Artists, Prints, Community, Twenty-five Years at the Caversham Press, at the 808 Gallery, and Three Artists at the Caversham Press—Deborah Bell, Robert Hodgins and William Kentridge, at the BU Art Gallery at the Stone Gallery. The first features the work done by the groundbreaking artists center based in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The second shows the work of three artists who were integral to Caversham at its beginning, focusing on their work during the turbulent years of apartheid in South Africa.
South Africa: Artists, Prints Community, Twenty-five Years at the Caversham Press is at the 808 Gallery, 808 Commonwealth Ave. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Three Artists at the Caversham Press—Deborah Bell, Robert Hodgins and William Kentridge is at the BU Art Gallery at the Stone Gallery, 855 Commonwealth Ave. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both exhibitions run through March 27 and are free and open to the public.
