Cheap Thrills over Spring Break
Photography, modern dance, and sketch comedy
Feel like a dose of culture, but don’t have time to get to the MFA or the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum? Check out the current show at the Panopticon Gallery inside the Hotel Commonwealth. The exhibition, Storytellers: Photographs by Frank Armstrong, Bill Franson, and Stella Johnson, offers what the gallery says are “three unique perspectives on how to tell a visual narrative.” Visitors will be transported by Armstrong’s black-and-white landscapes of the American Southwest, Franson’s photographs of New England, and Johnson’s vibrant images of Greece.
Storytellers: Photographs by Frank Armstrong, Bill Franson, and Stella Johnson is at the Panopticon Gallery, in the Hotel Commonwealth, 502c Commonwealth Ave., until March 29. Looking for a dance fix? Head over to FitRec tonight or tomorrow when local contemporary jazz dance company Rainbow Tribe performs its annual spring concert, Smoke and Mirrors. The volunteer-run company combines modern and classic dance styles, such as hip-hop, swing, and African styles, and seeks to foster a universal appreciation for dance in all its forms.
Rainbow Tribe will perform at BU’s Fitness and Recreation Center, 915 Commonwealth Ave., tonight, Friday, March 18, at 8 p.m. and tomorrow, Saturday, March 19, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students, seniors, and children under 11.
Finish off the week with a laugh at the Anderson Comedy troupe’s weekly show at Great Scott. The eight young comedians, who cite Monty Python, Tom Hanks, Woody Allen, and TV cartoons among their inspirations, will be performing stand-up and sketch comedy.
Anderson Comedy performs tonight, Friday, March 18, at Great Scott, 1222 Commonwealth Ave., Allston, at 7 p.m. Tickets to the 18+show are $5. More information about Anderson Comedy can be found here.
