There were about 20,000 people at BU’s 138th Commencement on May 22, and many of them can be found, with a little effort, in the picture above. The University’s GigaPan system allows online viewers to pan across the crowd with their cursors and zoom in on family, friends, and, of course, themselves. Have fun.
The time-lapse compilation above was shot between May 17 and May 23. The camera took one frame every 30 seconds, with some time off for unanticipated power outages. Video by Phil Zekos and Chris Maggio
Think of it as an art installation: 16,000 chairs, 310 police barricades, 4,800 square yards of matting, and 85 green trash barrels. Christo should be jealous. It takes the BU Commencement crew 3 days to set up the chairs, but only 90 minutes to fold up and stack them. Wait, there’s more. The ceremony also required 10 golf carts, a 60-foot boom, 2 tractors, 100 radios, 29 Porta-Potties, 85 ropes and stanchions…
