Flash Fashion Takes Over GSU
Food court transformed into impromptu runway
As students forked salads and pecked at iPhones on a recent rainy Friday at the George Sherman Union food court, four lanky young women were huddled together by a bank of trash cans, nervously straightening their long locks and boxy jackets.
“I’m so short,” moaned Taylor Stein (SMG’14), looking up at the other three girls, who had just then turned to watch workers quickly plunk a raised red runway down the central aisle.
“Holy moly,” Stein said.
What was unfolding was a guerrilla fashion show. Within seconds the runway was down and red drapes were quickly removed to reveal two speakers. Next, DJ Kevin Wang (COM’13, SMG’13) hit the volume on his laptop and house music flooded the floor as Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore (SED’87) grabbed a microphone to emcee the show. The four women threw off their jackets, and Stein, red tresses flowing behind her, strode toward the runway in a pair of footless knit leggings, cutoff shorts, and a cropped tweed jacket.
“I think we are in the middle of something here,” said a surprised onlooker, as Stein whisked past her.
The lunchtime crowd was caught off guard, but quickly rose to hoot, clamber on chairs for better views, and pull out their phones to snap pictures of the smiling models in their preppie-meets-hipster-meets-country-girl duds. While none of the clothes, courtesy of Jack Wills, a popular British chain with a store on Newbury Street, were couture, they all made good sense for English lit class, such as the above the knee striped T-shirt dress that Christina Moccia (COM’14) wore down the runway. While the models strode like pros, they all had big smiles (something Heidi Klum would tell them is a big no-no). Emily Burdett (COM’14), the sole experienced model in the group, drew the loudest cheers after hitting some poses in her cutoffs and boots.
As a final impromptu touch, a fifth model, Gianna Genovesi (CGS’12), dashed from class to the GSU just in time to throw on some boots and breathlessly hit the catwalk in oversized black glasses and a flouncy strapless dress. A few minutes later the runway and the models vanished as quickly as they had appeared, and the momentarily distracted lunchers returned to chewing.
The work of Delta Gamma Sorority, the guerrilla fashion show was a sneak preview of sorts for its far flashier show scheduled for next Tuesday, October 25, titled Project Delta Glam. The fashion show, at the GSU Metcalf Ballroom, is a fundraiser for the Delta Gamma Foundation’s Service for Sight, which supports organizations working with the visually impaired.
Project Delta Glam is next Tuesday, October 25, in the GSU Metcalf Ballroom at 7:45 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the GSU Link weekdays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., for $10 or at the door for $12.
