Preethi Chauhan and Monika Mathur became best friends by chance. Randomly placed together as roommates freshman year, the two have been inseparable since. Almost, that is.
“I studied abroad my first semester of sophomore year,” says Chauhan (CAS’11). “It was really tough leaving Monika behind—more than leaving my parents behind.”
Mathur (ENG’11) picks up immediately:“Once she came back, it was like—”
“Reunited, and it feels so good!”
Completing each other’s sentences is what led Chauhan and Mathur’s friends to refer to them jokingly as husband and wife for the past four years. Although they have been banned from teaming up for charades, the friends are always there to cheer for each other, at Chauhan’s Indian dance performances and at Mathur’s orchestra recitals.
After graduation, the two will part ways. Chauhan will go to dental school in New York for the next four years, and Mathur will work for an engineering company outside Philadelphia. Neither seems to be worried about the future of their friendship.
Chauhan: “I don’t think it’s something we’re going to have to work at to keep in touch.”
