Boston Landmarks Orchestra Hosts Gala
Proceeds will fund free outdoor summer concert series

Does $10 sound like a solid investment for a summer filled with free, outdoor music? You can be part of making that happen by attending tomorrow’s Boston Landmarks Orchestra 2012 Gala at the Harvard University Sanders Theatre. The proceeds from the first-time event will fund the orchestra’s free summer concerts at the Hatch Shell on Boston’s Esplanade and at outdoor venues in surrounding neighborhoods.
The Boston Landmarks Orchestra was founded in 2001 to provide great orchestral music free to all Bostonians. Its weekly summer concerts at the Hatch Shell now attract more than 60,000 guests a season.
The Saturday evening gala concert will be conducted by music director Christopher Wilkins and include a special performance by the Boston Children’s Chorus, whose founder, Hubie Jones (SSW’57), BU’s School of Social Work dean emeritus, will be honored at the event. The work of Boston-based Venezuelan composer Gonzalo Grau will also be premiered, alongside works by Aaron Copland, Joseph Haydn, Bedrich Smetana, and Robert Schumann.
The orchestra will launch its summer season July 11, with performances every Wednesday through August 29 at 7 p.m. at the Hatch Shell. Special neighborhood performances will also be held on Monday, June 11, at 6 p.m. in Dorchester Park, Sunday, July 15, at 6 p.m. at Jamaica Plain’s Pinebank Promontory, and Thursday, July 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the South End’s Blackstone Square. Committed to breaking down barriers for people with disabilities, the orchestra offers sign language services and Braille and large print concert programs.
The Boston Landmarks Orchestra 2012 Gala concert will be held tomorrow, Saturday, June 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sanders Theatre, 45 Quincy St., Cambridge. Parking is available at the Broadway Garage on Felton Street. By T, take the Red Line to Harvard Square, follow Massachusetts Avenue east and turn left on Quincy Street. Sanders Theatre is at the corner of Quincy and Cambridge Streets.
