The task force appointed by President Robert A. Brown to assess the culture of the BU men’s hockey team holds its first open forum for the BU community tomorrow from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Sargent Auditorium. The forum is designed for task force members to listen to input from the community. It will be moderated by Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore (SED’87).
The task force was created following sexual assault charges against two BU hockey players, one in December and one in February. Both players have pleaded not guilty.
“The Task Force is working to understand the nature of the interaction between the hockey team and the broader University community,” says Provost Jean Morrison, who cochairs the task force. “We are not trying to assess the guilt or innocence of the individuals who have been charged; rather, we are trying to understand if there are systemic issues that are related to the ice hockey team. If people feel they have relevant experiences or observations that will help us to understand the issues, they should let us know. We are asking members of the BU community to provide us with input they believe is relevant to our assessment of the culture and climate of the men’s ice hockey team.”
In addition to the open forums, members of the BU community may provide input in writing, either through a web portal established for this purpose or via traditional letters sent to Morrison and fellow task force cochair, Trustee Jonathan Cole, at the Office of the Provost, Boston University, One Silber Way, Boston 02215.
The task force is to report its recommendations by this summer.
The first public meeting of the Men’s Ice Hockey Task Force is tomorrow, April 11, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Sargent Auditorium, 635 Commonwealth Ave. Another public meeting will be held Monday, April 23, again from 4 to 5:30 p.m., in the Kenmore Classroom Building, Room 101, 565 Commonwealth Ave.
