Sh*t My Dad Says Author Reads Tonight
Justin Halpern comes to Brookline Booksmith
In 2009, Justin Halpern was a struggling writer who wasn’t making it in Hollywood, forcing him to move back in with his parents. That was, it turns out, the best thing that ever happened to his career. Halpern realized that his father’s bearish one-liners and sarcastic observations were comedic gold, so he started to share them on the Twitter feed “Sh*t My Dad Says.” The success of the tweets, which went viral, led to a New York Times best-selling book of the same name and a short-lived CBS TV show starring William Shatner as Halpern’s dad.
Halpern comes to the Brookline Booksmith in Coolidge Corner tonight to read from his second book, I Suck at Girls, which begins with a scene where Halpern tells his father that he’s going to propose to his girlfriend.
“You’ve been dating her for four years,” his dad replies. “It ain’t like you found a parallel f*cking universe.”
Halpern, Sr., then recommends that his son take a day to reflect upon what he knows about women. The rest is now history, chronicled in I Suck at Girls, a hilariously awkward journey of Halpern’s love life, from the time he made the girl he first kissed cry to how he lost his virginity while working as a dishwasher at Hooters. Today, believe it or not, he is happily married.
