Coolidge Corner Theatre Is Alive with The Sound of Music
See the Hollywood classic on the big screen tonight

If an old-time movie theater, buttery popcorn, and a musical with some of the best-known songs of all time are a few of your favorite things, then plan on attending the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s screening of The Sound of Music tonight at 7 p.m.
The movie is part of the art deco theater’s Big Screen Classics series, which encompasses films from Hollywood hits to foreign films to cult classics, shown on Monday nights.
The Sound of Music stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Based on the real-life story of the von Trapp family, the film centers on a young woman, Maria (Andrews), who leaves the convent to become a governess to the children of a widowed naval officer (Plummer) in Salzburg, Austria, just before the outbreak of World War II. A story of love and self-discovery, the film was based on the Broadway musical of the same name by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.
A huge box office hit when it opened in 1965, the film received 10 Academy Award nominations, winning 5, including best picture, and replaced Gone with the Wind as the highest grossing film of all time.
For those who have seen The Sound of Music only on television, now’s your chance to view that majestic sweeping opening number the way it was meant to be experienced—on the giant screen.
The Sound of Music screens tonight, Monday, July 15, at 7 p.m. at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline. By foot, head down St. Mary’s Street or St. Paul’s Street from Commonwealth Avenue to Beacon Street, and turn right. The walk takes 15 to 25 minutes. By public transportation, walk to the MBTA’s St. Mary’s stop on Beacon Street and take the outbound Green Line C trolley four stops to Coolidge Corner.
