YouSpeak: Got a Summer Job Yet?
Students upbeat despite grim economic news
The Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report for March painted a sobering picture for job seekers between the ages of 18 and 25. The unemployment rate for teenagers (16 to 19) was 24.2 percent and for workers under 25 was 16.2 percent—more than double the national average of 7.6 percent.
Slightly better news can be found in a recent report by the Economic Policy Institute, which found that for young college graduates the unemployment rate is 8.8 percent, but the underemployment rate is 18.3 percent, nearly double what it was in 2007.
With just four weeks left in the semester, we wondered how many students had found jobs for the summer. Despite the grim national numbers, most we talked to seemed upbeat about their employment prospects.
This week’s “YouSpeak” asks: “Do you have a summer job?”
