Want to develop a summer exercise regimen, but worried you don’t have time or can’t afford it? Two summer fitness programs are offering a range of classes in Boston parks throughout the day, and best of all, they’re free. Today alone, you can take a class in Pilates, tai chi, or yoga at a variety of city parks, courtesy of the Boston Parks Summer Fitness Series and the P.O. Fitness Series, sponsored by the Friends of Post Office Square. The public fitness classes are offered every weekday from June through August.
It’s estimated that only about half of adults in Boston exercise regularly. But the range of locations, downtown Boston, Fenway, Allston-Brighton, the North End, the South End, and Jamaica Plain, where these classes are offered make it easy to fit one in before or after work. And classes are held as early as 6:30 a.m. and as late as 6:30 p.m., so there’s no excuse not to take part.
Early risers can improve their physical strength, flexibility, and posture with a Pilates class this morning at the Norman B. Leventhal Park at Post Office Square at 7:15 a.m. For those seeking a midday workout, try a class in tai chi, the ancient Chinese martial art, at 12:30 p.m. in Franklin Park, the 527-acre expanse that straddles parts of Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, and Roxbury. Or for an after-work de-stressor, try a class in vinyasa yoga, tonight at 6 p.m. at the Boston Common parade ground behind the Frog Pond Carousel.
