Live Online Chat for Parents Tomorrow
Deans will answer questions concerning move-in, other issues
Going off to college isn’t just a big adjustment for freshmen. It can be an anxious time for parents, too.
Tomorrow afternoon, the Parents Program, which is administered by the Dean of Students office, will host a live online radio show that invites parents (and future students, if they are so inclined) to send in questions related to move-in or the start of classes. (Parents can also submit questions that address other concerns.) Moderating the discussion and fielding questions will be Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore (SED’87) and Assistant Dean of Students Daryl DeLuca. The chat, a new feature this year, is managed by Kat Hasenauer Cornetta, assistant to the dean of students.
“I think we see a lot more parents using social media sites, and we wanted to engage them there and online,” says Elmore. “These are a chance for us to be engaged with a lot more people than we normally would be during the summer, since we are home-based here during the summer months.”
During the first chat, which took place last Friday, more than 100 parents asked questions ranging from how move-in works to when the dining halls open, what their child should and shouldn’t bring, and whether there are shelves in the dorms’ closets. Based on last week’s show, DeLuca says that parents of incoming freshmen are “curious and inquisitive, and want to glean as much information about their students’ transition into BU life as they can.” (The first chat is archived on YouTube and as a podcast; both can be accessed on the Parents Program Radio Show page.)
To participate tomorrow, parents can pre-submit a question by heading to the Parents Program’s UStream page or emailing questions directly to parents@bu.edu. The show will be archived and can be viewed later, like the first show.
In the future, the Parents Program may host chats that discuss internships, jobs, and study abroad, says Christy Loring, associate director of the Parents Program.
Loring says her office is a place parents can call year-round with questions or concerns. “Parents are making a significant investment sending their kids to BU, and we want them to be well informed as to what’s going on at the University and engaged if they want to be involved,” she says.
The Parents Program Radio Show will take place tomorrow, Friday, August 1, at 3 p.m. Watch it live here.
