Searching for a leather clutch? Wool felt iPad cases? Custom blended teas? You can find them all—and much more—today at the Newbury Handmade Market, a pop-up shop at 301 Newbury Street that will remain open through August 3.
Open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the market showcases dozens of handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces made exclusively by the pop-up’s organizers, local artists who sell their work on Etsy, the website that allows people to buy and sell handmade items.
More than 50 artists are represented, each of whom has his or her own distinctive niche. Shoppers can find everything from handmade soap to scarves and photographs. You’ll find jewelry made from cut up photo strips and reused computer strips, notecards of scenes of the South End, delicate wire and key pendants, sea glass rings, and sad—yet cute—kitten pillows. Prices range from bargain deals to high-end purchases.
Many of the artists participating in the Newbury Handmade Market come from diverse backgrounds. Barbara Gross of Weston was originally a dancer and now creates jewelry by incorporating ideas of movement and energy into her designs; Kendra Tornheim is a Belmont-based software engineer whose jewelry business, Silver Owl Creations, specializes in wire and key jewelry; and Karen Whalen is a Jamaica Plain lawyer who, in her free time, is the owner and designer of, Karen Whalen Designs.
The Newbury Handmade Market, 301 Newbury Street, is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through August 3. The market features work by a rotating group of artists. Check out the market’s website for a listing of the days that each artist will be present. By public transportation, take an MBTA Green Line trolley to the Hynes Convention Center Station or Copley Station.
