Are you a pop culture guru, a Jeopardy! fanatic, a wiz at solving video puzzles? Put your knowledge and wit to the test at the Big Quiz Thing trivia competition tonight at the American Repertory Theater’s Club Oberon in Harvard Square. The cabaret-style multimedia contest poses questions about topics ranging from science and history to the latest intrigue from the Kardashian clan. Best of all, admission is free and you could win part of the $200 cash grand prize that’s split among four winning teams.
Quizmasters and comedians Wes Hazard and Noah Tarnow emcee the event, held the first Monday of each month, awarding trivia points for correct answers and Smart-Ass Points for wrong but hilarious answers. There are five rounds: video puzzles, audio clues, a Lightning Round, a Text Message Challenge, and a Buzzertastic Three-Way Finale.
Tonight’s competition has a Two Faced Celebrities video puzzle and rounds called Drones Are Watching Us and Answering “Ask the Editor” (aka the grammar police). Hint from BQT’s Twitter Feed: an audio round, From Cliché to Clich-Z, will focus on music and stale prose.
The Big Quiz Thing was launched by Tarnow, a website editor, National Public Radio trivia writer, and former Jeopardy! contestant, in 2002. It currently airs on NYC Life, the flagship channel of New York City’s official broadcast network NYC Media, and has received positive mentions from several publications, among them the Boston Herald.
In addition to the cash jackpot, prizes include restaurant and show tickets, Hubway passes, books, CDs, DVDs, baked goods, and more. So gather up a team of your cleverest friends and a laptop or tablet to share—the answering system is completely digital—and see how many other contestants you can entertain and outsmart.
The Big Quiz Thing is tonight, Monday, June 1, and the first Monday of every month, at 8 p.m. at the American Repertory Theater’s Club Oberon, 2 Arrow St., Harvard Square, Cambridge. Admission is free and doors open at 7 p.m. Alcoholic beverages (21+) and nonalcoholic drinks can be purchased during the performance. Club Oberon accepts all major credit cards except Discover. Take an MBTA Red Line train to Harvard Square. Follow the Big Quiz Thing on Twitter at @BigQuizThing or on Facebook for updates, daily Googleproof trivia questions, and a Not-So-Secret clue before the event.
