Photos capture this week’s record-breaking storm
The latest winter storm to hit Boston dropped 23.1 inches on a city still reeling from two major snowfalls in less than two weeks. When it was over, the storm, named Marcus, made the preceding 30-day period in Boston the snowiest on the record books—with 76.5 inches since January 11.
This latest storm shut down both the Charles River Campus and the Medical Campus for two days and forced the suspension of all MBTA commuter rail, trolley, and subway service. All told, the Charles River Campus has been closed by snow five days this winter. Most students we heard from hunkered down, opting to stay indoors and wait it out.
“I’ve been sleeping in, working on essays (thankfully the due dates keep getting pushed back), and cooking a lot,” says Jordan Hirsch (COM’17). “I’m perfectly happy staying inside with a movie and hot chocolate.” Gloria Chan (COM’17) spent Monday camped out at the Warren Towers dining hall with two friends. For nine hours, she says, she was “catching up on work…and of course, snacking.” When the dining hall closed, the three hung out in her room until late, watching movies and drinking cocoa and tea. And why not? They had Tuesday off as well.
Others say they have had enough. “The first couple of snow days, I went outside and played in the snow,” Erin O’Donovan (SAR’16) says. “But at this point, it’s hard to enjoy it anymore.”
BU Today reached out to members of the BU community via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Weibo, asking them to share photos of the storm that helped set an all-time snow record for Boston. Our thanks to all who contributed.
