Coolidge Corner Theatre film series at the Rose Kennedy Greenway begins June 23

Pack up your blankets, towels, and lawn chairs and head down to the Rose Kennedy Greenway’s Wharf District Park tonight for a special screening of the 1973 cult classic American Graffiti.
The showing launches a new free outdoor summer film series called The Coolidge at the Greenway, a partnership between Brookline’s Coolidge Corner Theatre and the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, with support from Boston Light & Sound.
Set in 1962, American Graffiti follows the escapades of a group of teenagers from Modesto, Calif., the night before they head off to college. Starring Richard Dreyfuss and Ron Howard as best friends Curt Henderson and Steve Bolander and directed by George Lucas, American Graffiti was nominated for five Academy Awards and is one of the highest grossing films of all time.
Two other films will be shown in the Coolidge at the Greenway series this summer: Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 thriller The Birds on July 14 and Steven Spielberg’s 1983 megahit E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on August 4. American Graffiti starts at sunset and will be shown on a giant 12-foot-by-30-foot screen. Get there early to snag a prime spot and enjoy some fun lawn games. Several food trucks offering an assortment of cuisines will be on hand, a modern homage to Mel’s, the film’s iconic drive-in diner.
American Graffiti will be screened tonight, Tuesday, June 16, (rain date June 23) at sunset (about 8 p.m.), at the Rose Kennedy Greenway’s Wharf District Park, between Milk and India Streets in downtown Boston. Admission is free. Take an MBTA Green Line trolley to Haymarket, a Red Line train to Downtown Crossing, or an Orange Line train to State Street; Wharf District Park is a 10-minute walk from each. The Birds will be shown Tuesday, July 14, (rain date July 21) and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Tuesday, August 4, (rain date August 11).
