Updated Saturday, July 11 at 9 a.m. The MBTA says full service is expected to be restored to the B Line later this morning.
All trolley service on the MBTA Green Line B branch has been shut down between Blandford Street and Babcock Street after a piece of debris fell from the Comm Ave bridge that extends over the Massachusetts Turnpike Friday afternoon and landed on a worksite below.
The Boston Globe reports that Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokesman Michael Verseckes said workers are in the middle of a project to rebuild the bridge’s substructure, or foundation. It is unclear whether that affected the chunk of debris, estimated to be about two feet by three feet.
Green Line service has been suspended as inspectors examine the trolley tracks where the bridge carries Commonwealth Avenue over the pike and assess damage and make repairs to the bridge.
Affected stops include Blandford Street, Boston University East, Boston University Central, Boston University West, Saint Paul Street, Pleasant Street, and Babcock Street. The Route 57 bus along Comm Ave is running and those needing service along that stretch of the avenue should take the bus. In addition, the MBTA has added extra bus shuttles running from the Kenmore Square T station to Packard’s Corner.
One westbound travel lane on Comm Ave across the bridge is closed, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo, who says that repair work on the bridge is expected to last well into the night. He added that no disruption to service has occurred on the turnpike or the commuter rail.
